ZILLAH, Wash. – Yakima County Fire District 5 shared an update on Wednesday on the warehouse fire from Mon., Oct. 7
A media release shared by Captain JJ Ihnen says the fire on Bella Terra Road started at around 6 p.m. with reports coming in of a fire in bailed hops inside a cold room.
Crews arrived to find the building with pressurized smoke pushing out of closed doors. The fire inside eventually started to burn through the roof.
The owners of the building contacted their refrigeration company and recovered most of the Anhydrous Ammonia from the building before power was cut and the roof collapsed.
The fire was eventually contained by 2 a.m. early the next morning. An estimated $6.8 million was lost.
YCFD5 says the fire was caused by a spontaneous combustion of bailed hops. The building has since been returned to the owner who will complete extinguishment.
