KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash. – A wildfire that burned 5,000 acres of natural vegetation at the Yakima Training Center northeast of Selah is now out, according to Yakima Training Center Public Affairs Officer Paul Noel.

The fire on the west shore of the Columbia River near Avril Fruit was pushed by high winds and multiple fire agencies responded, according to a social media post from the Yakima Training Center Firefighters.

Noel says military personnel were evacuated from the training area, though the base was not evacuated. No structures are being threatened and no one is injured.

YTC Lieutenant Colonel Tim Horn says the fire is located at the east central area of the 327,000-acre training facility. Crews from East Valley Fire, Selah Fire, Yakima Fire, Hanford Fire, Yakima Fire District 5, Naches Fire, Highland Fire, Vantage Fire, Roslyn Fire, Cle Elum Fire and Kittitas County Fire and Rescue are helping fight the fourth alarm fire.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Crews will be out on scene overnight.
