Yakima-Tieton Irrigation District continues work on canal repairs following Retreat Fire

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. – The Yakima-Tieton Irrigation District provided an update on Thu., Aug. 22 on its work in repairing its canal that took damage from the Retreat Fire out of Rimrock and recent storms.

YTID says concerns on the 114-year-old canal’s stability have arisen due to landslides, rain and debris damaging its structure, including its drainage features that are used for managing water flow.

An engineering team is evaluating the repairs urgently to get the canal restored as soon as possible. The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) Team is also in the area looking at environmental conditions.

An upcoming report from BAER will help YTID plan its restoration strategies.

YTID also got a grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce to help in restoration efforts, though the District is still in need of more funding and partnerships to avoid a canal failure.

More details and updates can be found on the YTID website and Facebook page.
