Yakima, Kennewick and Benton County awarded crime prevention grants

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Yakima and Kennewick are among law enforcement agencies getting a share of $6.3 million to help fight crime in Washington.

The Justice Department announced that 17 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants, two Field Initiated: Encouraging Innovation grants and one formula funding grant were awarded to law enforcement agencies across the state on Dec. 16.

“The Byrne JAG program is an invaluable resource for state and local law enforcement. This funding will provide police across our state the cutting-edge equipment and tools they need to prevent crime, improve public safety, process DNA samples faster, and deliver justice for victims,” Sen. Maria Cantwell said in a statement on the funding.

The Department of Justice’s JAG program provides states, tribes, and local governments with funding to support programs, including law enforcement, prosecution, crime prevention and education, drug treatment and enforcement and technology improvement, according to a Senate press release on the grants.

Yakima, Kennewick and Benton County to receive funding.

City of Yakima: $63,243 to fund police overtime hours for increased patrols in high-density and high-crime areas, as well as new e-bikes for officers and communication equipment.City of Kennewick and Benton County: $41,304 to purchase new radios and ballistic equipment.
