YAKIMA, Wash. – With the Fourth of July coming up, the Yakima Humane Society shared some pet safety tips to keep them safe.

YHS says to exercise pets early in the day when they will be easier to handle and calmer without fireworks going off.

Be sure to keep items that are toxic away from pets, including charcoal, glow sticks, fireworks and sparklers along with food items like avocadoes and fruit pits.

YHS says to keep dogs in a comfortable room with the radio or a TV on for familiar noise when fireworks are going off.

YHS notes that one in five dogs go missing over the 4th of July, so make sure your pets are licensed and microchipped with the most current information.
