YAKIMA, Wash. – The Yakima City Council has declared Oct.12 as “Staff Sergeant Jack J. Pendleton Day” in honor of his bravery and heroism. Pendleton remains Yakima’s only Medal of Honor recipient.

VFW Post 379 plans to host a ceremony for the community at 10 a.m. at Tahoma Cemetery to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Pendleton’s actions that earned him a Medal of Honor.

During an attack on a German machine gun nest, Pendleton faced enemy gunfire and sustained a leg injury while leading his squad. He later died from his injuries.
