YAKIMA, Wash. – The Yakima Health District reported on Friday the first flu-related death of the season in Yakima County.

The person that died was reportedly between the ages of 30 and 49 and had underlying health conditions.

YHD said flu activity in Washington is classified as “very high” and continues to climb since activity started increasing in mid-December.

Of all flu tests conducted from Dec. 22 to 28, 22.55 percent came back positive for the flu, a 3.14 percent increase from a month prior.

YHD highly recommends everyone aged six months or older to get the flu vaccine, which can be administered alongside the COVID-19 vaccine. Those at risk for severe flu complications are young children, pregnant women and those with underlying health conditions.

If experiencing respiratory illness symptoms, YHD recommends to stay home, get tested and wash hands frequently.
