Yakima awarded over $350k to address domestic violence, sexual assault

YAKIMA, Wash.-The City of Yakima has been awarded over $350,000 to combat domestic violence from the Department of Justice.

The $353,998 grant funded through the Office on Violence Against Women, Fiscal Year 2024 Enhancing Investigation and Prosecution of Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking Initiative, was awarded on Sept. 13.

“Supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and holding individuals accountable who perpetrate this violence is critical to building safer and strong communities,” said Vanessa Waldref, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington.

According to the DOJ, the City of Yakima will use the funds in partnership with YWCA Yakima provide a victim advocate, identify high risk cases for referral, provide more resources for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and provide training for officers and prosecutors to recognize and address bias about victims of domestic violence.
