WASHINGTON, D.C.-The Yakama Tribal Solar Canal and Hydro Project has been awarded up to $32 million.

The funding, from the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas (ERA) program, was announced by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

“This announcement is great news for the Yakama Nation as they continue to work on improving grid resilience, boost their renewable energy supply, and strengthen service reliability,” said Sen. Murray.

The ERA program awards grants funded under the Bipartisan Infrasturcture Law to rural and remote areas to help improve reliable and affordable clean energy in underserved communities.

According to a press release from Sen. Murray’s Office, the $32 million award will support the Yakama Nation’s efforts of converting irrigation canals into a solar-powered and micro-hydropower irrigation system.

More information on the project that will also help conserve water and save on utility bills is available online. The project will also reportedly install solar panels and train and hire Tribal members.
