Yakama Nation hosting a walk for justice, symposium for MMIP awareness

TOPPENISH, Wash.-The Yakama Nation is hosting two events to raise awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People.

On Sunday, May 5, a REDgalia: a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Awareness Walk and Stand for Justice will be held.

The community is invited to join in solidarity for the walk from the Heritage Cultural Center at 100 Spiel-Yi Loop to Yakamart at 111 Fort Road in Toppenish.

1 p.m. Poster making and REDgalia shirt giveaway (people must be present to receive a shirt, while supplies last).2 p.m. Walk begins on the Cultural Center lawn.2:30 p.m. Adrian Jackson, Jr. and family story followed by open mic.3:30 p.m. Stand for justice along the sidewalk.

On Tuesday, May 7, the Yakama Nation will hold the MMIP Symposium Building Bridges: Collaborative Partnerships from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Legends Casino Event Center.

The symposium hopes to empower indigenous voices and create a platform for sharing stories, experiences and strategies between indigenous communities, government agencies, law enforcement and advocacy groups, according to the Yakama Nation.
