RICHLAND, Wash.-A new practicum experience aims to help aspiring teachers thanks to the Washington State University Tri-Cities College of Education and Tapteal Elementary School.

Tapteal Elementary in West Richland was designated as a “WSU Tri-Cities College of Education Teaching Laboratory School” at a ceremony on Friday, Oct. 18.

“Tapteal’s partnership allows all our candidates to gain valuable insights into teaching and learning from exemplary mentor teachers, enhancing the significance of their education and the skills they develop to become educators,” said John Mancinelli, the Field Services Director at WSU Tri-Cities.

Teacher Laboratory Schools will provide early practicum experience in multiple classrooms with specific topic, rather than the traditional single classroom model, according to WSU Tri-Cities.

Teacher candidates will then volunteer in specific classrooms to support and apply teaching techniques they gained through observation.

WSU Tri-Cities will designate Maya Angelou Elementary and Roselind Franklin Elementary in Pasco as teaching laboratory schools on Nov. 4 after both volunteered to be part of the program.

More information about the WSU Tri-Cities College of Education, which offers multiple routes for those pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in education, as well as certification programs for principals, program administrators and superintendents is available online.
