Winter weather advisory issued for Yakima and Kittitas valleys, how WSDOT prepares

YAKIMA, Wash. – The National Weather Service has issued a winter advisory warning for Kittitas and Yakima Valleys, warning of the possibility of multiple inches of snow.

The NWS estimates anywhere between one and three inches of total snow accumulation in both valleys, which could result in hazards for both in-city and out of city drivers.

Summer Derrey, the public information officer for the Washington State Department of Transportation South-Central Region, says crews have already been hard at work preparing for the incoming storm.

“We do what’s called pretreatment,” Derrey said. “So we’ll put chemicals on the roadway that reduce the impact of icing on those sections.”

Derrey states that WSDOT crews will also be out 24/7, responding to calls and keeping roadways clear and safe for travelers.

She also suggests keeping a go-bag or kit of important items in the back of your vehicle in the case of an emergency. These items can include hats, gloves and mittens, flares, jackets, hand-warmers, and a fire extinguisher.
