PENDLETON, ORE.- When snow begins to melt and rivers rise there is an increased safety risk according to the Pendleton Fire Department.
According to PFD Paramedic Captain Jared Uselman, when temperatures begin to rise rivers can go from one or two hundred cubic feet per second to two or three thousand cubic feet per second overnight.
Uselman says if you have kids it’s important to be extremely cautious even around unassuming or familiar waters, “the little creek that is nothing in the summer and winter but then in the springtime becomes completely engorged with water and can get especially children in a lot of trouble.”
Being familiar with your surroundings and noticing if the water levels have changed recently is important when it comes to safety according to the PFD.
If you do plan on being out on the water during winter and spring it is important to know how to stay safe.
The most important thing to look at when selecting a life jacket or personal flotation device is size and weight requirements. All life jackets should be clearly labeled with size and weight requirements, according to the PFD and choosing a life jacket that is too big or too small can be dangerous.
Sizing for adult life jackets is based on chest size. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the jacket should be snug but comfortable.
If you are unsure if the life jacket you selected is the right fit, tighten the straps and tug upwards on the shoulder. If the life jacket slides over your head it is too big. You can also test the jacket in shallow waters before going into deeper waters or going out on a boat.
When caring for and storing your life jacket while not in use the U.S Coast Guard says you should let your life jacket dry fully before storing it. Never dry your life jacket in a dryer or on a radiator as this can destroy buoyancy.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, you should always prepare your life jackets before use.
Before using your life jacket check for wear and tear. If the jacket has tears and holes or if any straps and buckles are broken do not use it.
If you only use your life jackets during the summer or on a boat be sure to test them before using them at the beginning of the season.
