YAKIMA, Wash.- It wasn’t out of the usual when Kayla Nidever sold 18 Match 4 lottery tickets to a woman.
“It was a regular customer,” says the Wray’s Marketfresh Meadowbrook cashier. “She comes in all the time and buys tickets.”
The winner told Washington Lottery she picked her numbers based on birthdays and her “second chance at life.”
“I’d be happy for anybody but knowing that she’s in here all the time and we have kind of a relationship, that makes it really special,” says Nidever.
Most people have bought a lottery ticket, seeing the potential jackpot thinking “Why not?” For most, the win never comes.
“Because if all your balls missed, then a ticket with all different balls has a greater probability of winning,” says Dr. Learn.
He says the odds of winning any Match 4 ticket are 1 in 10,626, let alone banking 18 tickets on the four numbers.
“In mathematics, we often think of the most ridiculous case to illustrate our points,” explains the professor. “I basically put all my eggs in one basket and haven’t benefitted myself.”
The cashier that sold the tickets says the winner has already come back in to buy more tickets. Wray’s cashier is most happy the winnings go to someone local.
“Knowing that she’s in here all the time and we have a kind of a relationship, so to speak, that that makes it really special,” says Nidever.
