TRI-CITIES, Wash. – Zillow’s home value index shows Washington’s median home price is $226,000 more expensive than the U.S. median cost. At $591,000 you might wonder what impacts the cost across the state.

Realtor Frank Prior said each area has its own economy and that can have a big impact on the median price.

With property on the west side of the state being higher generally, he said it can all depend on a variety of factors like how much other homes in the area are selling for or even the school district the home is in.

After being in the Tri-Cities for 30 years Prior said he has seen growth contribute to increasing prices.

He said for those looking to buy a home right now it’s important not to overspend.

“You don’t want to overspend. You don’t want to make yourself house-poor,” he said. “I think you would want to buy something big enough that you can grow into.”

He also recommends keeping your credit clean. Something he said to accomplish by avoiding big purchases and taking out other loans before you go to buy a home.

“What can they afford with the income that they have or what are they doing to increase their incomes so that they can afford the house that they want?” he said.
