OLYMPIA, Wash.-Wapato is one of 16 cities across Washington awarded a share of $3 million to boost housing production.

The Department of Commerce announced the grant funding to streamline the local building permit review process by initiating digital permitting processes and consolidating permit reviews to strengthen the production of new housing on Oct. 7.

Wapato was awarded an $89,219 Consolidated Permit Review Grant to streamline building permit review and remove barriers to housing development, according to a Department of Commerce press release on the grants.

“These grants will help modernize and streamline the way residential building permits are processed, reducing delays, cutting down on paperwork and helping us meet that urgent need for new housing,” said Commerce Director Mike Fong.

The investments were funded under the 2023 Washington State Legislature’s year of housing and were awarded as Consolidated Permit Review Grants and Paper to Digital Grants, according to Commerce.
