WEST RICHLAND, Wash. – Two acts of vandalism in West Richland‘s parks have prompted comments from the Police Department.
Judie Smart, a longtime resident who frequently visits the Bombing Range sports complex, was shocked upon seeing the damage for the first time.
“…I’ve lived here 16 years, and it’s the first I’ve seen any vandalism in any of the fields,” said Smart.
The sports complex was not the only site affected. Commander Mitchell Coates reported additional damage to the brand new bathrooms at Heights Park at Red Mountain.
“Over by the New Development off of Keene… there was some vandalism that was done in there.” said Coates. “The doors were broken, a mirror was broken.”
The damages are expected to cost the city thousands of dollars and require extensive man-hours to repair. Coates emphasized the impact on the community, stating that he too is a resident.
“It just really hurts us and me personally, when people come up and tear things up in the city,” said Coates.
Both the West Richland Police Department and City took to Facebook Oct. 31 to warn residents of the vandalism, stating that until further notice, the bathrooms at the Heights Park and Field Four at Bombing Range will be closed.
“I’m very disappointed… that anyone would do something like that,” said Smart.
Police are now asking the public for help. Coates says if you any information that could help the West Richland Police Department in their investigation, or see anything suspicious, to contact their non emergency line, (509) 628-0333.
