WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s transition team is evaluating options to replace Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense if he is not confirmed.
Multiple sources familiar with the discussions have indicated that Trump’s allies are compiling a list of alternative candidates. Among those under consideration are Iowa Senator Joni Ernst, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and Tennessee Senator Bill Hagerty.
The sources have noted that Ernst is widely viewed as willing to accept the role and, importantly, is considered confirmable.
Hegseth may end up withdrawing his name from consideration due to past sexual assault allegations and claims of misconduct during his time running veterans’ advocacy organizations.
