WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Donald Trump has announced Matt Whitaker as his choice for U.S. ambassador to NATO. Whitaker previously served as acting attorney general during part of Trump’s first term.
Whitaker also has experience as a U.S. attorney in Iowa, adding to his qualifications for the ambassador role.
Trump’s relationship with NATO has been complex. Earlier this year, he stated that he informed a NATO-member country that the U.S. would not protect them against a Russian invasion if they failed to meet NATO spending guidelines.
