PASCO, Wash.-Tri-City Prep righthanded pitcher Caleb Sherfey had the start of a lifetime on the mound last week, tossing a perfect game for the Jaguars.
Sherfey spoke with NonStop Local’s David Graf about how his dream game played out.
“So I just went at it with a mindset of just do my thing well, obviously it worked,” Sherfey said.
Not only did it work, it worked to perfection as Sherfey fanned 13 batter over five dominant innings in a 26-0, five inning win over White Swan on March 15.
Sherfey, a senior, mainly relied on his power pitch to twirl his gem for the Jags.
“My fastball was working a lot,” Sherfey said. “Same with the curve, mixed in a curve there. Yeah, just fastball. No one could really hit it and it kept working, so I kept doing that.”
Going out inning after inning when your stuff is working and you and your teammates know you’re at the top of your game can be challenging, however, Sherfey was able to maintain his championship mindset every inning.
“Yes, I knew about it, but I tried not to think about it too much to mess with me mentally,” Sherfey said of staying sharp all game. “I just kept trying to go out every inning like it was its own.”
A perfect game will surely be a lifetime memory for Sherfey, but the pitcher’s sights are set on a different kind of perfection now-another state title.
Most of the Jaguars state title-winning team from last season are back for 2024 and most of the team has been playing together for four years now.
“We only graduated one senior last year and we’re very tight with each other,” said Sherfey.
