TRI-CITIES, Wash. – Washington State Patrol Trooper Chris Thorson said driving too fast is the biggest issue they see with fog-related crashes.
“The number one thing you need to do to avoid being in a collision is to slow down. That’s what we’re seeing all across the board. You may not be able to drive 70 miles per hour on the highway, you may have to drive 50 miles per hour and that’s totally fine if you have to drive that way to avoid a collision,” Trooper Thorson said.
Thorson said that speeding and reckless driving are two of the main causes of deadly crashes. According to Washington State Patrol’s 2022 Annual Report, 89 out of the 314 deadly crashes that year involved speeding. The report also shows that in 2020 there were 214 deadly crashes. 283 in 2021 and 314 in 2022.
Thorson said the 2023 annual report should be published this February or March.
