YAKIMA, Wash. – A Toppenish man was sentenced on Monday to 84 months and one day of imprisonment followed by five years of supervised release for strangling his partner and threatening her with a gun, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington.
Tyler Jones Senator, 24, previously pleaded guilty to brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence and assaulting a partner by strangling or suffocating.
Court documents say that Senator grabbed the victim’s neck while in her vehicle, leaving bruises and scratches on her throat.
The assault continued later in their Toppenish home, where Senator hit, kicked and bit the victim before hitting her in the head with the butt of a rifle and pointing it at her.
“Mr. Senator assaulted the victim, who is the mother of his young child, by choking her and hitting her with a firearm,” said U.S. Attorney Vanessa Waldref. “I commend the bravery of the victim in coming forward. Everyone deserves to live in a safe home free of domestic violence. We recognize that indigenous communities suffer domestic violence at much higher rates than many other demographics. We are committed to addressing violent crimes in Indian country and elsewhere and holding perpetrators accountable.”
