OLYMPIA, Wash.-The Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding residents to keep fire safety in mind when celebrating Halloween this year.

Celebrated in the fall, many might not think of the potential for fire danger when planning their Halloween celebrations, but a few simple steps can keep you, your children and your home safe.

Halloween fire safety tips from the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office:

If children are attending a Halloween party away from home have them find two safe escape routes in case of an emergency.Avoid long costumes that drag on the ground.Use battery operated candles or glowsticks in pumpkins instead of real candles.Keep decorations including cornstalks and dried flowers away from candles or other heat sources.Keep exits clear of decorations so escape routes are clear in the case of a fire or other emergency.Make sure all smoke alarms in your home are working properly. If using real candles in pumpkins place them away from anything that can burn and out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doors and walkways.
