[Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 and Tolkien book plot.]
The most famous weapon in JRR Tolkien lore next to Sauron’s One Ring is introduced in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 finale. TV Insider is exclusively debuting the scene, which also confirms the existence of Elendil’s (Lloyd Owen) other son, Anárion, who along with Isildur (Maxim Baldry) are Aragorn’s direct ancestors. The sword Aragorn will one day wield, Narsil, is revealed in the video above.
In the scene, ousted queen Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) is urged to flee Númenor by Elendil as political conflict in the island kingdom reaches a tipping point. Having already confessed their love for each other, Elendil can’t imagine leaving without her.
“We must leave for the west, there are Faithful there,” he hurriedly says. “My son, Anárion, amongst them. I know a ferryman who can get us outside the city.” Míriel is resolute and calm as she refuses to leave, telling Elendil to use the cover of night as a shield. “One does not need eyes to lead in the dark,” she says.
“What cowardice have I ever shown to make you think I would even consider making safe my own skin at the peril of yours?” Elendil declares.

“My place is here. You know it is,” Míriel says. As Elendil replies, “And where is mine, if not with you?”
Míriel won’t let Elendil leave unprotected. She gifts him the longsword and says, “it is called Narsil,” also known as the White Flame. The weapon was forged in the First Age of Middle-earth and ended up in Númenor, but Tolkien’s works don’t specifically note how Elendil came into its possession. The Rings of Power has filled in that gap by having a Queen of Númenor gift it to him.
“Reclaim your lordship, and with this sword your destiny,” the regal Míriel tells him.
Fans of the books and Lord of the Rings movies know the significance of this sword and Elendil and Isildur’s connection to it, as it’s fated to be instrumental in the war against Sauron in both the Second and Third Ages. Like the Dark Lord, the blade has many names in Tolkien lore, such as Narsil, Andúril (the Flame of the West), and the Sword that was Broken.

In the Third Age, it is believed that Narsil can only be wielded by the future King of Gondor. It also has a magical power to it, as the only weapon that can command the Army of the Dead.
