Sunnyside woman dead after hit-and-run crash near Toppenish

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash.-One person is dead after a hit-and-run crash north of Toppenish on Sept. 16.

Washington State Patrol Troopers responded to the scene on Branch Road about two miles north of Toppenish around 8:04 p.m.

According to the WSP, a BMW heading west on Branch Road toward SR 97 failed to yield the right-of-way and was hit by a Chrysler 200 going northbound on SR 97 toward Branch Road.

The driver of the BMW, 32-year-old Noemi Salazar Perez of Sunnyside died at the scene of the crash. Her next-of-kin has been notified, according to the WSP.

A passenger in the BMW, a 39-year-old Sunnyside man was transported to the hospital in Yakima after the crash.

A 26-year-old male passenger in the Chrysler was also injured and transported to the hospital.

The driver of the Chrysler, a 28-year-old man from Chiapas, Mexico ran from the scene after the crash, but was taken into custody a short time later, according to the WSP.

The official cause of the crash is under investigation and charges may be brought against the driver of the Chrysler pending the results of the investigation.
