YAKIMA, Wash.-Summer target shooting rules on the Wenas Wildlife Refuge go into effect on Wednesday, May 15.

Target shooting hours are restricted every summer on the 105,000 acres managed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife between Selah and Ellensburg to reduce the risk of wildfires.

Target shooting will only be allowed between sunrise and 10 a.m. from May 15 through Sept. 30, according to the WDFW. Starting June 1 steel targets will also not be allowed through Sept.

Seasonal restrictions improve safety for adjacent landowners and protect wildlife habitat by reducing fire risk, according to the WDFW.
