[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for the Sullivan’s Crossing Season 2 premiere, “Guilt Trip.”]
We’re not sure that Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) even made it to the interstate before she was called back to Sullivan’s Crossing because Sully (Scott Patterson) was rushed to the hospital. Luckily, that meant Sully didn’t spend too much time alone, but also, his prognosis is not good. He had a stroke and doctors are worried about deeper issues going on.
Before Maggie could fully process what Sully’s doctor was trying to tell her, an emergency alert went off and Maggie walked out of the room to discover that Sully had collapsed in the hospital. The final image of the episode was Maggie looking at her father, bleeding out from his head on the hospital floor.
“Oh dang, we’ve got quite a season ahead of us. This is how we’re starting?” Kohan spoke about her reaction in a recent Swooon interview. “How much more could possibly happen at this point? Has she lost him again? I think absolute shell-shock is right.”
Sully’s village is going to have to surround him now to help him get back on his feet. That means that Maggie also has to let people step up and help out. Kohan revealed that Maggie won’t be as stubborn about that as she was in Season 1, but it is still going to be difficult for her.
“It’s a hard thing for her, but she kind of has to [let other people help]. It’s a hard thing for all of them. They all seem quite independent and stubborn in the Sullivan family,” she explained. “That’s the lesson she needs to learn, for sure… She’s changing, and she’s growing. She’s opening up and starting to actually listen to some of the people around her and trust that they are there to support her.”
Will one of those people be Cal (Chad Michael Murray)? He arrived at the hospital to check on Sully and was confused to find Maggie acting so cold towards him. He soon realized that she never received his letter after Sully explained why she was so pissed off. However, when Cal tried to explain face to face what happened, Maggie was not interested in hearing what he had to say.
“It just makes it harder for her,” Kohan said when breaking down why Maggie refused to finish the important conversation with Cal. “It makes it a harder decision. If she knows that he’s interested, then she has to take that into consideration. If he’s not involved, she can just think of what is right for her and for the baby. Once he’s’s potentially there, then I think things get muddy for her and that’s a hard thing.”

If fans were hoping there would be a quick fix to Maggie and Cal’s communication issues, they were sorely disappointed with the premiere. Not only did Maggie avoid hearing Cal confess his feelings, but she also contemplated getting back with Andrew (Allan Hawco).
“There was love there at some point. They clearly did work together at some point,” Kohan said of Maggie and Andrew’s relationship. “I think she’s probably hoping that’s still there somewhere if she’s going to have a baby with him and him be part of the baby’s life in that way.”
Maggie is stuck between her head and her heart when it comes to her love life. Kohan revealed that will continue to be a major hurdle for Maggie in Season 2, but she is working on it.
“I think it’s still the battle between the old her, where she is independent and figure things out on her own, and letting people in and being able to just listen to her heart,” Kohan admitted. We can only hope she figures it out soon so she realizes she belongs in the Crossing — and with Cal.
