TRI-CITIES, Wash.-The Washington State Patrol will conduct emphasis patrols in the area throughout boat race weekend to keep race fans and the community safe.

WSP Troopers will conduct Traffic Safety Emphasis Patrols focused on speeding, DUI, aggressive and distracted driving and seat belt enforcement.

“Our primary goal is to reduce serious injury and fatality collisions,” the WSP said in a statement announcing the patrols. “We want this Water Follies weekend to be a safe and enjoyable event for everyone in the Tri-Cities.”

According to the WSP, Troopers from around the region will be working in the Tri-Cities through the weekend due to the expected crowds for Water Follies and will be using aircraft, motorcycles and unmarked patrol cars during the emphasis patrols on I-82, SR 240 and SR 395.

The WSP is also reminding residents of some road closures in Columbia Park during races.

The main entrance to Columbia Park on westbound SR 240 will be closed from 4 p.m. through 6 p.m. on both Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28.

The westbound SR 240 off-ramp to Edison Street will also be closed during the same timeframe.

The closures are necessary to ensure safe exits from the park for fans and to keep pedestrians safe, according to the WSP.

Cars will also not be allowed to stop on the shoulder of SR 240 to drop off or pickup race fans or for viewing the races.
