TACOMA, Wash. – Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, along with other elected officials, announced an initiative to create the state’s first-ever Smokey Bear license plate.
As part of the initiative, the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will need to gather 3,500 signatures in order for the license plates to be considered by the Department of Licensing. This would be the DNR’s first license plate, and the state’s only plate dedicated towards wildfire prevention.
Legislators in both the House of Representatives and Senate will also submit bills in support of this effort.
All revenue generated from the proposed plates would be directed towards wildfire prevention. If approved, plates will cost $40 for the initial plate and $30 for renewals, and would be available for purchase in October 2024 for all vehicles requiring a license plate.
Those who are interested can go to the DNR’s Smokey Bear license plate page to sign up.
