OLYMPIA, Wash.-It’s never too early to teach kids about fire safety and the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office is offering some reminders for parents, teachers and caregivers of Preschool-age children.
Anyone who has small children at home, in a family, daycare or school setting should have a plan because kids could need help getting out of the house in case of a fire or other emergency, according to the SFMO.
Three children under the age of 10 died in home fires in Washington in 2022, however, there are some steps that can be taken to keep you and the children around you safe in a fire.
Fire safety messages for Preschool age children from the SFMO:
Do not be afraid of firefighters. They are community helpers. While their equipment may look or sound scary it keeps them safe.When you hear a smoke alarm go outside and stay outside until an adult or firefighter tells you it’s safe to go back inside.Test smoke alarms so children are familiar with the sound they make. Have a plan in case of a fire and practice evacuating the home.Stay away from hot things, such as stoves and never play with matches or lighters.
