KENNEWICK, Wash.-The Southridge High Cheer Team recently placed second in two events at the State Championships.
In only its second year as a competitive program, the Suns Cheer Team has risen to the heights of the state standings, coming in second in both the 3A/4A Tumbling Small and the 3A Game Day Medium competitions.
In the 3A/4A Tumbling Small, the Suns Cheer Team hit all tumbling skills, all major elite stunt sequence skills and all pyramid skills for a score of 71.9 to place second behind only Graham-Kapowsin.
During the second day of competition, the Suns garnered a score of 75.6 for another second place finish behind Auburn Mountainview in the 3A Game Day Medium.
According to a post from Southridge High, Suns Cheer has only been a competitively structured program for a few years and has made great strides to the upper echelons of state.
“They’re great athletes, but at the same time, one of the big things is their season is incredibly long and they do multiple things,” said Southridge Athletic Director Rick Wells. “They help out at assemblies, they perform, they do things on the sideline and they compete. It’s just this whole swath of different things that they can do. It’s a really interesting, challenging thing, and I think they’re just really, really special.”
