OLYMPIA, Wash.-Thousands of Washingtonians will be receiving restitution from debt adjustment companies who used predatory practices on student loan borrowers.

State Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s Office announced the recovery of over $2 million for student borrowers on October 17.

The latest restitution is part of the AG’s Office Student Loan Initiative to help students sign up for and then pay off loans.

According to a press release from the AG’s Office on the restitution, debt adjustors illegally charged tens of thousands of dollars in fees to student loan borrowers in Washington.

Through 2023, the AG’s Office has resolved cases against 35 economic entities or debt adjustment companies, resulting in payments of almost $800 for 2,652 borrowers in Washington.

Anyone in Washington with student loan debt who believes they may have been charged or required to pay fees above what is allowable by law on their loans are advised to file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office.
