WAPATO, Wash. — After nearly a month, I-82 eastbound has reopened for traffic a single lane, according to the Washington Department of Transportation.
Previously, WSDOT announced that the road would tentatively reopen on March 1st.
WSDOT announced the closure of the highway on Feb. 12, 2024 after they discovered erosion caused by by an embankment failure under the eastbound lanes. The sinkhole they found was estimated to to be around 10 feet wide by 4 feet deep and 40 feet long.
Less than a week later, WSDOT closed the westbound lanes for further repairs after crews found further damage to the irrigation culverts under the road.
Construction delays pushed the reopening of the westbound lanes from Feb. 23 to the 24th.
