OLYMPIA, Wash.-The holiday season is, unfortunately, also respiratory virus season and the Washington Department of Health is encouraging all Washingtonians to take proactive steps to ensure a safe and healthy season.
Washington is currently seeing the typical seasonal increase in respiratory illnesses, including the flu and RSV, according to the DOH. An online dashboard is available to track illness rates across the state.
“Our agency encourages everyone to celebrate responsibly by practicing preventive measures such as vaccination, wearing masks in crowded settings, and washing your hands frequently,” said Umair A. Shah, MD, MPH, Washington State Secretary of Health. “Our collective commitment to safety ensures that the joy of the holidays, not respiratory illnesses, are shared.”
Steps to a healthy holiday from the Department of Health:
Vaccines: Consider getting a COVID vaccine or booster, as well as the regular seasonal flu shot. Check vaccines.gov to find appointments near you.Masks: Wear a well-fitting mask in crowded or poorly ventilated areas.Test: Consider taking a COVID-19 test prior to holiday gatherings.Wash your hands: Wash your hands thoroughly several times a day.Stay home when sick: If you are feeling ill, stay home.
