YAKIMA, Wash. – Yakima Police Captain Shawn Boyle was appointed as the new interim Yakima police chief, filling the gap caused by the retirement of Chief Matt Murray.

Interim Yakima City Manager Dave Zabell says Boyle will take the role on July 1, immediately following Murray’s retirement date of June 30

“Captain Boyle has an outstanding record as a law enforcement professional and has continually demonstrated his leadership abilities throughout his career,” said Zabell. “I am confident he will apply his significant experience to his role as interim chief.”

Boyle started as a military police officer for the U.S. Army in 1991 and later joined YPD as a corrections officer in 1996. He was promoted in 1997 to police officer, in 2007 to sergeant, in 2015 to lieutenant and in 2019 to captain.

Boyle also leads the regional SWAT tactical team as the team commander and served as a law enforcement liaison to the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission. He has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration and went through the FBI National Academy, the Northwest Command College and the FBI-LEEDA Leadership Trilogy program.
