YAKIMA, Wash.-The Educational Service District 105 Board of Directors has selected a new Superintendent.

Shane Backlund, the current Deputy Superintendent, will take over for Kevin Chase, who is retiring after a 40-year career in education on July 1, according to the district.

“Shane is a distinguished leader with a positive record in strategic leadership and operational excellence,” said Gwyn Trull, Chair of the ESD 105 Board of Directors.

Backlund was the Superintendent of the Selah School District for over a decade before joining ESD 105 in 2022 and has been recognized for his service to students and schools in south central Washington by the Washington State Association of Superintendents, according to an ESD press release on his hire.

“I’m humbled and honored to be able to continue to serve an organization where I believe in the people and the mission so deeply,” said Backlund. “We have amazing educators in the ESD 105 region and I’m thankful for the opportunity to build on the legacy of leadership that makes this area such a special place.”
