Scheffler sidelined by Christmas cooking injury

World number one Scottie Scheffler will miss the PGA Tour’s season opening event in Hawaii after injuring his hand while making Christmas dinner, the player’s manager said on Friday.

The injury rules Scheffler out of The Sentry which starts on January 2 but he hopes he will be able to feature in The American Express in La Quinta, California on January 16.

“On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass,” Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, said in a statement on Friday.

“Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery. He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament is The American Express,” he added.

Scheffler has just enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in PGA Tour history winning seven tournaments on the tour — the first player to reach that tally since Tiger Woods in 2007.

Last month he was voted the PGA Tour Player of the Year for the third consecutive year.

Scheffler won his second Masters green jacket, Paris Olympic gold, the PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship and FedEx Cup playoffs and The Players Championship this year.

He ended last season with victory at the unofficial Hero World Challenge Invitational which gave him nine wins in all competitions in the year.
