Safe Christmas tree decorating for your holiday season

KENNEWICK, Wash. — For many families, the start of December signals the beginning of the Christmas decorating season.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, electrical problems or a heat source placed too close to the tree cause half of all Christmas tree fires.

To avoid being part of the average of 160 fires per year reported by the NFPSA, follow the following tips for a safe holiday season.

When purchasing a fake Christmas tree, look for the “Fire-Retardant” label. Trees with this label are less likely to catch on fire and easier to extinguish if they do.For live trees, it’s important to check for freshness: ensure the needles are green, hard to pull off the branches and that they bend without breaking. When setting up the tree, place it away from fireplaces, portable heaters, heat vents, radiators and electrnoics. Additionally, make sure the tree is not blocking an exit. Live trees should have two inches cut off from the base of the trunk and placed in a stand with at least a gallon of water added daily.

When decorating your tree, read all the labels on any electronic decorations.

Use only indoor or outdoor lights that have been labeled and tested.Check all new or old lights for broken sockets, frayed wires or loose connections. Throw away or repair any broken lights before using them.Turn off all lights on the tree before leaving the house or going to bed.Place the bulbs so they are not touching any needles or ornaments.Never use lit candles to decorate a tree.
