RICHLAND, Wash.-Sacajawea Elementary School student Kymberli Carlson has won an art contest for her painting of a dragon’s eye.
Carlson received over 900 votes for her winning painting on Artsonia.com, an online collection of student art where teachers can submit artwork from their students.
“My favorite color is blue, so I used blue watercolor and blue oil pastels to make the scales on my dragon,” Carlson said. “I did some shading in the eyes with the pastels to make it look more realistic.”
Carlson’s teacher, Barbi Wolf, has been teaching art for over 27 years and submitted Carlson’s dragon eye painting into Artsonia’s Artist of the Week Contest.
“I love helping my students see themselves as artists and watching them grow year after year because I believe all children are capable of success,” Wolf said.
According to Artsonia, 12 random submissions are chosen each week in four different age groups (PreK-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12) from artwork submitted the previous week. Voting is open to the public for several days before the winner is announced.
The winning school that the artist of the week goes to receives a $100 gift card from Blick Art Materials and the winning student artist gets a $50 gift certificate.
