RICHLAND, Wash. – With school out for the summer, the Richland Parks and Recreation team is giving the community a way to get out and away from screens with “Pop-up Play Days” that offer something fun and educational for kids around the community.
Jenny Davis, a recreation coordinator with Richland Parks and Recreation, said they welcome parents and kids from all over the community to get out and enjoy the weather!
Each pop-up day is a little different. Organizations from around the community join in on the fun. Lowe’s offers a station to teach kids how to plant seeds. Parks and Recreation provide volleyball, cornhole, and other games.
It will give you something to do, and most importantly, it will help build community and friendships.
“It’s important for kids to be able to find and interact with different kids,” said Davis.” It’s also important for parents to meet other parents too. I think we all just stay home too often these days instead of getting out and meeting new people and new friends.”
Davis said events like this one are the perfect opportunity for families to get together. These pop-up days are held once a month until August.
Davis said Richland Parks and Recreation put a lot of hours into getting this event up and running, but seeing the kids smile and have fun makes it all worth it. She sees parents, guardians, and kids getting out and having fun together, not just sitting in front of a TV or computer, playing outside, spending time together, and enjoying the parks around our area.
“It’s huge,” she said. “It’s what keeps us going every day. Knowing that we’re providing activities for families is why we work for the Parks and Rec Department.”
Davis said the Richland Parks and Rec didn’t do this alone.
She said many different organizations show up to help put on this event, providing different education stations. She said each month, they will have pop-up play days with different themes.
Davis said this is the second year they’ve held this event. The next pop-up play day is on July 16th at Howard Amon Park. The theme is “Community Helpers”.
