OLYMPIA, Wash.-The Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding everyone to think fire safety before decking the halls this holiday season.
While lighting up your home with lights, candles and other decorations is common this time of year some simple tips can ensure a safe holiday season.
Candles and open flames caused an estimated $57 million in property damage across Washington State in 2023, according to the SFMO.

Don’t overload outlets: Follow the instructions on lights and extension cords to prevent overloading outlets.Throw away damaged light strings or extension cords: Don’t use cords or light strands with exposed wires.Tree safety: If you have a live tree make sure it has plenty of water and remember live trees will dry out and can be fire hazards.Keep decorations cool: Keep your tree and other decorations away from heat sources to prevent fires.Consider candle alternatives: Consider using battery-powered candles when decorating.Establish a safe cooking area: Keep towels and flammable material away from the stove, don’t leave cooking food unattended and keep children and pets out of the kitchen.Create an emergency plan: Create and practice a fire escape plan with your family.
