Lithium ion batteries power myriad toys, tools and devices, from smart phones to smoke alarms and cars, however, in rare cases they can cause fires or explosions.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, lithium ion batteries store a large amount of energy in a small space and fires can occur if they are used the wrong way or are defective.
Some signs of problems with your lithium ion battery include, a burning odor, changes in color or shape, leaking or odd noises.

Purchase and use batteries that are listed as having been tested by a qualified testing laboratory.Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and using your lithium ion battery.Only use the battery intended for the device it came with or was purchased for.Make sure batteries are installed correctly in the device.Only use the charging cord that came with the device.Do not charge a device on your bed or couch.Keep batteries at room temperature.Keep batteries out of direct sunlight and never leave in hot cars.Store batteries away from all flammable materials.
