PROSSER, Wash. – According to a press release from the City of Prosser, Police Chief Jay King submitted a letter of resignation to the City on Fri., Feb. 23.
King was originally placed on administrative leave on Jan. 11 for a third-party investigation regarding allegations from Prosser Police Department staff.
The investigation began on Jan. 17. Mayor Gary Vegar says the City contracted with independent investigator Lance King for the investigation.
Sergeant John Markus was selected as the Interim Police Chief at the start of the investigation and will continue to serve in the position until further notice.
King was originally appointed as the Prosser Police Chief on Feb. 28, 2023.
King stated the following, in part, in his resignation letter:
“It has been my pleasure to serve the City of Prosser and its residents. In my 33 years of law enforcement experience, I have had the privilege to work with many agencies and I had hoped to spend many more with the City of Prosser. It has always been my intention to do what is best for the department, and at this time, it appears that the department might be best served by another leader.”
