Prosser brothers break 1,000 points in hunt for state title

PROSSER, Wash. – The Prosser Mustangs reached the semifinals in the WIAA Boy’s Basketball 2A Championships in 2023, finishing fifth and placing higher than any Mustang team in the last 50 years.

And in 2024, the team is hunting for more. Especially the McClure Brothers.

Kory and Koby McClure have grown up playing basketball together, being only one grade level apart. They’ve now hit 1,000 points each, with only a few weeks between each of them hitting the milestone.

Koby, who will be a senior in the 2025 season, is also in position set a new school record for career points scored, currently held by Haden Hicks at 1,431.

“I give it all to my teammates and coaches,” said Koby. “They put me through everything, work me hard. I’ve put in time by myself too, just trying to perfect the game and that’s been a big impact.”

This is the last season for the brothers to play together due to Kory graduating in 2024. And as the older sibling, he’s gotten the opportunity to watch his brother grow alongside him.

“His biggest improvement has been working on his mind and how he’s shifted how he thinks about things,” said Kory. “How he’s growing into this confident basketball player. He’s really putting in all this work and it’s starting to show and I hope it continues. Even next year to keep going.”

The goal for the McClure brothers is to not only make it to the state tournament, but to make a deep run at the 2A state title.

However, as far as scoring records go, they are still brothers.

“We’ve always had a competition between each other and it would definitely feel good to pass him,” said Koby.

“Maybe he can get the scoring record if he keeps it up,” said Kory. “I don’t think that’s our main priority right now. I’m all for him just breaking whatever I get.”

The Mustangs’ regular season ends Jan. 30 hosting Selah. The district tournament starts Feb. 7, however Prosser likely will not play until the semifinals on Feb. 10.
