TRI-CITIES, Wash.-Thanksgiving is the meal we wait all year for, the busiest day in our kitchens, when seemingly every appliance is in use and every inch of counter space taken up, however, it is also the day when most kitchen fires occur.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home-cooking fires, with 3 to 4 times as many flare-ups as any other day of the year.
Kitchen safety tips from the Yakima Fire Department for a safe Thanksgiving:
- Take the time to prepare: Before cooking make sure your cooking areas and counter spaces are free of any flammable material.
- Do not leave cooking food unattended: With a home full of family and friends it can be easy to forget about what’s in the oven or on the stovetop and unattended food is the leading cause of kitchen fires.
