CROOK COUNTY, Ore.-H5N1 bird flu has been detected in a pig in the United States for the first time.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, the pig that tested positive for bird flu showed no signs of illness and results for two other pigs are pending.

There is currently no concern about the safety of the nation’s pork supply, however, the case is concerning due to the fact that pigs can become infected with both bird and human viruses at the same time, which can then mutate and infect humans, according to NBC News reporting on the incident.

According to the USDA, the farm where the pig tested positive is noncommercial and has been quarantined to prevent the spread of the virus.
