PENDLETON, Ore. –
Pendleton native and World War II veteran, Robert Stangier, had a ceremony honoring his Distinguished Flying Cross award that he received close to 80 years ago.
After being drafted for the war, Stangier says he enlisted in the air force because at the time it was one of the glamourous things you could have done at the time.
Stangier was a b-25 pilot and completed 70 missions during his tour, he was sent back home 2 weeks before the war ended in 1945.
According to the Air Force Personnel Center, This medal is awarded to any officer or enlisted person of the armed forces of the United States for heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight.
“I’m grateful that the community has chosen to honor me in this way, there are a lot of veterans that arent here with us anymore that deserve this recognition as well so this isn’t just for me it’s for them too,” says Robert Stangier, World War II Veteran.
Stangier volunteers at the Pendleton Air Museum every Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. If your would like to speak with him and talk about his experiences the museum is in downtown Pendleton at 21 SW Emigrant Ave, Pendleton, OR 97801.
