UMATILLA, Ore.-One person is dead after a house fire near the Umatilla Police Department on the night of May 10.
The fire at 401 6th Street was reported around 8:22 p.m. When fire crews arrived the home was burning and someone was trapped inside.
According to the Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District, rescue efforts were hindered by the intensity of the fire and the person inside the home died.
Fire crews stayed on scene overnight until about 10:30 a.m. on May 11, putting the fire out and keeping nearby buildings safe.
“I greatly appreciate our police and fire responders who came together during this difficult time to serve and protect our community,” said Umatilla RFPD Fire Chief Chris Grant.
The Red Cross is assisting those who have been displaced due to the fire and the Oregon State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
The identity of the person who died in the fire is being withheld at this time and the Umatilla Police Department is investigating.
The Umatilla Police Department, Boardman Fire Rescue District, Echo Fire Department, Irrigon Fire Department and Umatilla County Fire District #1 all assisted during the fire.
