WASHINGTON – Ohio Sen. JD Vance (R) was selected on Monday to be former President Donald Trump’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election.

According to NBC News, Vance was critical of Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign. But since winning a Senate seat in 2022, he’s become one of Trump’s closest allies.

Vance is openly against the U.S. sending aid to Ukraine. In Dec. 2023, he suggested that Ukraine should cede land and make a deal with Russia to end its war and dismissed concerns that Russia would continue marching through Europe if Ukraine was taken.

Vance has also voted against the codifying of abortion rights and access to contraception, along with clashing with Democrats with their calls for stricter gun laws.

As an 18-month senator, he’s introduced 57 bills or resolutions and co-sponsored several others. NBC News says only two bills he co-sponsored have made it to President Joe Biden’s desk, both being vetoed.

A bipartisan bill, the Railway Safety Act of 2023, that he has sponsored with fellow Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown (D), is still making its way to be voted on in Senate. The act follows the 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio and addresses safety requirements for rail carriers and trains transporting hazardous materials.

He has co-sponsored other symbolic resolutions that were adopted, including one to celebrate the U.S. flag and the Pledge of Allegiance and another to honor former first lady Rosalynn Carter.

Vance was reportedly not in Congress on Jan. 6, 2021 and did not participate in the voting of the certification of the 2020 election.
