TRI-CITIES, Wash.-Solar flares from a massive solar storm could disrupt power and communications systems and make the northern lights visible in many states.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a geomagnetic storm watch and the effects of the solar storm are expected to reach earth by the night of Friday, May 10.
With warm temperatures and clear skies in the forecast for much of Washington the northern lights may be visible on the evenings of May 10 and 11, however, you may have to get away from the light pollution of the Tri-Cities to enjoy the celestial show.
Spots to catch the northern lights near the Tri-Cities:
Badger Mountain: The trail is popular for hiking both day and night and while it provides the height, it may be too near the lights of the city to get a good view.Vantage: SR 240 between Richland and Vantage should provide plenty of areas to catch a glimpse of the northern lights. If heading towards Vantage make sure you find a safe place away from traffic to pull off the road.North Stevens Drive: Stretches of N. Stevens Drive heading toward Hanford can be popular stargazing spots and may afford a view of the northern lights this weekend. If heading that way be sure to find a safe spot to pull off the road away from traffic.North Franklin County: Several areas of North Franklin County should be dark and open enough to experience the northern lights. Heading north on 395 toward Kahlotus should afford some decent stargazing opportunities.Anywhere in Northeastern Oregon or Southeastern Washington where you can safely get away from light pollution.
